Odysseus’s skin shrivels, his hair turns gray, and the sparkle leaves his eyes. It is the home of my faithful swineherd, Eumaeus.Īthena: No one must know that you have returned. SD1: Odysseus follows Athena to a small hut in the forest. Home at last !Īthena: Odysseus, your home has been overrun by unruly suitors hoping to marry your wife, murder your son, and steal your kingdom. He falls to his knees and kisses the ground. SD2: Odysseus stumbles onto a rocky beach. When you arrive, invent some reason to get him out of his house. Hope left this land a long time ago.Īthena (whispering) : Go to the hut of Eumaeus. Telemachus: I feel foolish for hoping he will return. You and your father will rid Ithaca of these power-mad princes. Now that I am a young man, these suitors see me as a threat.Īthena: Have faith. I was just a baby when my father left for Troy. Now we are but a shadow of the great and noble kingdom my father built. Day after day, they feast on my inheritance. Telemachus: These men are princes who want to wear my father’s crown. Īthena: He is alive-and he will soon return. Telemachus: My father? I have been searching for him for many years. In my travels, I heard news of your father. Tell me, where do you come from?Īthena: From far away. Telemachus: I am Telemachus, son of Odysseus. SD2: He guides Athena to an elegant carved wooden chair. SD1: As the music starts, Athena-in disguise-appears beside Telemachus. SD2: Telemachus leans against a doorframe, watching. SD1: Dozens of suitors sit around a grand table, laughing merrily as servants clear the remains of a grand feast. Then I would have been buried with honor and remembered as a hero. SD3: He looks out at the wide expanse of water. Odysseus: O gods, will I ever return to my wife and son? To my home? SD2: Poseidon, satisfied, sinks back down beneath the waves. SD1: Another wave smashes the raft into pieces. SD2: Finally he breaks through the surface, gasping and coughing. SD3: He creates a massive wave and sends it hurtling toward Odysseus. SD2: Poseidon gathers the clouds and raises his trident. SD3: He does not notice as Poseidon, god of the sea, rises from the water. SD2: Odysseus shakily gets to his feet and squints. Greek Chorus: Rise, Odysseus! Look to the horizon. GC2: Now, his crew and his ships are gone. GC1: And the goddess who turns humans into pigs! GC1: And he has been thwarted at every turn. ![]() GC3: He has been trying to get home to the island of Ithaca ever since. I had many beautiful ships and brave warriors at my command. GC1: Twenty years ago, Odysseus left Ithaca to fight in the Trojan War. SD1: A weary-looking man lies on a wooden raft in the middle of the sea.
